What Are the Key Specifications to Consider When Purchasing LED Curtain Lights?

Understanding the technical specifications of LED curtain lights helps consumers select products that meet their expectations for appearance, coverage area, and durability.

Light Count and Spacing:

Curtain lights are typically described by the total number of LEDs and the dimensions of the curtain. Common sizes include 3x3 feet, 5x6 feet, and 10x10 feet.

The number of vertical drops and the spacing between drops determine the density of the curtain. Typical configurations have 8 to 20 drops per curtain width.

Spacing between individual LEDs on each drop ranges from 2 to 6 inches. Closer spacing creates a denser, more continuous appearance but increases power consumption.

The total LED count affects brightness and visual impact. A 5x6 foot curtain might contain 200 to 600 individual LEDs depending on spacing.

LED Size and Type:

Many curtain lights use miniature LEDs in standard sizes such as 5mm or 3mm diameter. Smaller LEDs create a more delicate appearance but are less visible from a distance.

Some products use M5 or M6 LEDs (5mm or 6mm round lenses) which provide good visibility while maintaining reasonable power consumption.

Chip-on-board (COB) LED technology is appearing in some premium curtain lights, offering a continuous line of light rather than distinct points.

The LED shape affects light distribution. Round lenses provide wide-angle illumination, while flat-top LEDs may have narrower beam angles.

Wire Color and Appearance:

The wires connecting the LEDs are typically available in green, white, black, or clear (coated copper).

Green wires blend with foliage for outdoor use. White or clear wires are less visible against walls or windows for indoor display.

The wire insulation material affects visibility. Some manufacturers use coated copper wire that is less conspicuous than standard PVC-insulated wire.

For invisibility, some premium lights use optical fiber extensions or very fine magnet wire.

Length of Vertical Drops:

The drop length determines how far the lights hang down from the horizontal support. Common lengths range from 3 feet to 10 feet.

Longer drops require more total wire and LEDs, increasing weight and power requirements.

The bottom of each drop may terminate with a single LED or may have a horizontal connecting wire (a "bottom string") that connects all drops for stability.

Weather Resistance Rating:

Outdoor-rated curtain lights should carry an IP44 or higher ingress protection rating. IP44 indicates protection from splashing water and solid objects larger than 1mm.

Fully weatherproof lights suitable for direct rain exposure are rated IP65 or IP67, meaning they are protected against water jets or temporary immersion.

The rating applies to the LEDs, wires, and especially the connections and power supply.

Indoor-only lights typically have no IP rating or are labeled for dry location use only.

How Do You Install and Hang LED Curtain Lights Properly?

Proper installation ensures that curtain lights display correctly and remain secure throughout the holiday season. The process involves mechanical mounting, electrical connection, and aesthetic arrangement.

Mounting Methods:

Adhesive hooks (rated for the weight of the lights) can be attached to walls, windows, or gutters. The hooks should be spaced every 12 to 18 inches along the top support.

Screw hooks or cup hooks provide more secure mounting for heavier curtains or outdoor installation where wind may cause movement.

Tension rods inserted into window frames allow installation without hardware, supporting the curtain light's horizontal cable.

Gutter clips attach to rain gutters for roofline installation, with the curtain hanging down over siding or walls.

Suction cups with hooks work on glass surfaces but may lose adhesion in cold temperatures or direct sunlight.

Installation Steps:

Measure the mounting area and select a curtain light size that provides adequate coverage. The curtain should be slightly wider than the area to ensure full coverage.

Attach mounting hardware at the desired height, ensuring it is level. For outdoor installation, verify that hardware is rated for exterior use.

Hang the curtain light's horizontal support cable or tube on the mounting hardware. The cable should be taut enough to prevent sagging but not stretched to the point of stressing connections.

Separate and arrange the vertical drops. Many curtain lights ship with the drops twisted or bundled to prevent tangling. Carefully separate each drop and allow it to hang freely.

Adjust spacing between drops if the design allows. Some curtains have fixed drop positions; others allow sliding adjustment along the top support.

Connect the power supply and test before finalizing arrangement. This allows repositioning if brightness or coverage is unsatisfactory.
